Michelle Obama in Montréal: Five memorable quotes

Obama fever swept over Greater Montréal again on February 5, when the former First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama, gave a conference organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montréal (CCMM).

More than 10,200 people, including 2,000 students invited by CCMM, showed up at Montréal’s Palais des Congrès, where it reached a fever pitch. The table of honour was not only made up of elected officials, but also included women in positions of power and exceptional women.

Just a few months after her husband came through the city, Michelle Obama was able to charm the already won-over audience by discussing five topics she cares about: education, gender equality, racism, social responsibility and female empowerment.

Here are five memorable quotes from the evening:

  • When talking about politics:

“The presidency doesn’t change who you are. It reveals who you are.”

  • When talking about education:

“I urge young people to take school seriously. On this one, listen to your parents.”

  • When talking about Canada:

“We were thinking about what if we had to leave our country and go to another place. We’d come here.”

  • When talking about gender equality:

“The power exists in this room to make change tomorrow. The question is: Is the will there?”

  • Her recipe to being an agent of change:

“Education, action, and compromise.”

A few Greater Montréal ambassadors were also on hand:
